Developmental Courses for Latin American Students
Proyecto BBRAVO is an integral part of the Spanish as a Living Language of our Latino Cultures (LL) and Native Language Learners (NL) curricula. It is a multi-faceted program that provides students with a rich and meaningful collection of real-life learning experiences, self-discovery, identity, and knowledge through hands-on activities. The course incorporates Latin American literature, Spanish grammar, and orthography.
Curricula Components
The first component is The Central Theme. The process of self-identity and self-discovery begins with literature.
The second component is the Apprenticeship. In this stage, the students have taken the first component and are now taking upper-level Spanish classes. They will continue with the program by becoming an apprentice. The students taking apprenticeship will tutor students taking beginner-level classes and assist Spanish teachers with any need they may have. This experience will earn them community service hours for graduation.
The third component is the Academic Symposium, which takes place in the LL curriculum. Second-year LL students are responsible for designing, planning, and implementing a symposium that relates to their curriculum.
Summer Field Experience
The fourth component is the Field Experience. The students will experience working at venues such as El Museo del Barrio and Edelman Company: Multicultural Division among others. Sites are in New York City and Westchester County.
The Field Experience is a five-step process that must be completed in order to earn high school credit. If NL and/or LL students are interested, they must write an essay in Spanish stating their interest and why they would want to work at one of the sites.
The candidates will first be interviewed and carefully selected. When the candidates accept the position, they must record a minimum of 200 hours at the site and keep a daily written journal in Spanish. Upon the successful completion of the work experience, participants may receive one and a half unit of credit.
